Three people were able to escape from a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer after it broke through the ice at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday on Big Lake in Sherburne County.
According to Sheriff Joel Brott, Steven Bergquist, 45, of Big Lake, Natalie Muehring, 46, of Albertville, and Berqquist’s 12 year old son were approximately 100 yards out from the north shoreline on approximately 7 inches of ice traveling to their fish house. The rear portion of the vehicle broke through and became partially submerged. All three crawled from open windows of the SUV onto the ice surface. Minutes later the vehicle broke completely through and fell to the bottom of the lake in 25 feet of water. No one was injured and efforts to remove it were underway on Monday.
Ice conditions and depths on Big Lake and other area lakes have been terribly inconsistent during the winter. Sherburne County has experienced several incidents of persons and equipment breaking through the ice over the past several weeks.
