Princeton High School speech students Brian Kunz and Gino Fraboni became medalists at the state high school class AA speech meet last Saturday in Chanhassen. It means that Kunz, a PHS junior, and Fraboni, a sophomore, made it into the final round, where Kunz ended up in sixth place and Fraboni in eighth.
The 24 contestants in each category are whittled down during the meet’s preliminary rounds to where eight in each category advance to finals.
Kunz’ category was discussion, while Fraboni was in storytelling. PHS student Kenny Cowles, a junior, also was in the state speech meet, competing in extemporaneous speaking.
PHS head speech coach Thor Mattick said it was “wonderful” to have two state medalists. He noted that this was the first time that PHS has had multiple state speech medalists in his nine years as coach, and also for the first time since 22 years ago.
