The Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a National Take Back Prescription Drug Initiative this Saturday, April 28, in the lobby of the sheriff’s office in Milaca from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The sheriff’s office is on the south side of the courthouse and the lobby entrance is on the building’s west side. Captain Jason LaSart urges people to bring in unused or expired prescription drugs so that they can be disposed of properly and do not get misused.
Prescription drugs should not be flushed down sinks or toilets because this practice has resulted in medications showing up in water supplies, LaSart said.
Also, criminals trying to make a quick buck are stealing meds and selling them on the street, especially when the economy is bad, LaSart added.
No needles or syringes will be accepted at the drop off site. This is the second year the sheriff’s office has run the program and is coordinating it with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.
