Kyle Matuska wins Coors Light Wissota Midwest Modifies
Princeton, MN (May 18) – Thunder, lightning, rain and strong winds didn’t stop the night of WISSOTA Amsoil dirt track racing series action Friday night at the Princeton Speedway. The fans toughed out the rain delay and Armed forces night sponsored by Auto Value was in full effect by 8pm. The track was in excellent condition allowing for some good racing filled with exciting battles.
The first race of the night was for the Coors Light WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Kyle Matuska and John Nelson led the cars as the green waved. Nelson and Matuska battled for the lead with Matuska grabbing it. Within a lap, Ryan Bowers went from sixth to third and made his way next to Nelson for second as the yellow flew. The restart was Matuska with Bowers and Nelson behind him. Bowers took second and slid by Matuska taking first with Alan Bohlman, Bud Martini and Shane Sabraski grabbing top points. Bohlman moved into second and challenged Bowers for first. Sabraski and Justin Oestreich both passed Matuska and battled for fourth with Oestreich getting it. Bowers and Bohlman continued the back and forth battle for first while Martini closed in on them. With half the race over, Bohlman took over the lead and Bowers and Martini battled for second. Oestreich moved behind Martini and Bowers when the yellow flew. Bohlman was alone on the restart with Martini and Bowers fighting for second. Martini took second as the green flew and moved next to Bohlman for first. With four laps to go Martini took the lead and Bohlman held second. Sabraski took over fourth and went after Bowers for third. The checkered flew and Martini crossed the line taking the win with Bohlman, Sabraski, Bowers and Oestreich as the top finishers.
Ryan Kostreba took the lead as the green dropped for the WISSOTA Street Stocks. Brad Schmidt and Rick Nelson battled for second with Dave Read behind them. Read didn’t waste time and moved into second while Schmidt took third. After a caution, Read got right behind Kostreba for the lead and took the point. Read began to pull away while Kostreba and Schmidt battled for second. Justin Pogones made his way into fourth and was right behind Kostreba and Schmidt. Schmidt took over second and Pogones moved into third while Kostreba fell to fourth. Read set the cruise and had a straightaway lead over the others while Pogones moved next to Schmidt. Pogones took second and put his foot down to try and get some ground on Read. Kostreba took over third from Schmidt as the race wined down. Read took the win with a lead of 3.4 seconds over his competitors.
The Viking Coke WISSOTA Mod Fours were next up to run with Ross Mead taking the early lead. Brandon Kellen took second and moved next to Mead for first. Mead held onto the lead while Troy Kuehl and Dean Larson battled for third behind Kellen. Kellen again slid next to Mead and he took the lead this round. Kuehl, Larson and Mead all went for second with Kuehl taking the point. Mead had third and Larson had fourth with Corry VanMil moving in behind Larson. Kuehl caught up to Kellen for first as the yellow flag flew. The restart order was Kellen with Kuehl and Larson in tow. Kuehl took over second while Larson tried to hold off VanMil. VanMil however took over third and Larson battled Mitch Hribar for fourth. Hribar took over fourth and sped to catch the other leaders. Kuehl moved next to Kellen for first and VanMil followed as the yellow flew. Kellen was first on the restart but anxious Kuehl and VanMil were behind him. Kuehl took the lead when the green flew and VanMil took second. Hribar moved next to Kellen and quickly took third leaving Kellen and Larson battling for fourth. One final yellow flew and the restart was a green, white, checkered flag start. Kuehl was first with VanMil and Hribar behind him. Kuehl sped away and gave himself a good lead over VanMil while Hribar ran close to VanMil. The checkered flew with Kuehl taking the win. VanMil, Hribar, Abrahamson and Larson took the top five points.
The Ray’s Auto Body WISSOTA Super Stocks rolled onto the track for the next feature. Josh Anderson took the lead as the green flew with Dexton Koch, Jake Goetze and Chris Wark behind him. Wark and Shane Sabraski moved in on Goetze for third with Wark taking the point. Sabraski then moved to Wark’s side and took third. Sabraski sped away and took over second from Koch as Mike Loomis made his way into fourth and then took third. Sabraski caught Anderson for the lead as the yellow appeared. Anderson was first on the restart with Sabraski on his rear. Sabraski began to work Anderson for the lead, but Anderson continued to pull out of turns faster keeping the lead. Dan Gullikson and Dave Read moved up on Loomis for third while the battle for first kept on. Sabraski was able to make his move and take over the lead putting Anderson in second. Loomis was still holding third but Gullikson raced at his side for multiple laps. With five to go, Gullikson locked into third with Loomis and Read in the top five. Read slid next to Loomis for fourth and Gullikson challenged Anderson for second. Read took over fourth, but Anderson held onto second as Sabraski crossed the finish line and took the win.
The Grand Casino WISSOTA Modifieds were last up for their feature and J.T. Johnson took the lead as the green flew. As the drivers came through turn four, everyone was fighting for points and they all were hitting each other. Dave Cain got pushed under Dustin Nelson’s car and Cain coasted to a stop in turn one. The yellow flew and drivers were sorted as Cain was towed off the track. Johnson was first on the restart with Shane Sabraski and Kris Peterson behind him. Sabraski took the lead and Johnson held onto second while Larry Zeller quickly took third. Nelson and Joey Jensen battled for fourth as Jensen made his way up into second. Zeller, Nelson and Tim Alexander took top points as the yellow flew again. Sabraski was still in first but Jensen was on his rear as the green flew. Zeller moved next to Jensen for second and they battled on the bumper of Sabraski. Sabraski could feel the heat from Zeller and Jensen as Zeller went to the high side and moved to Sabraski’s door. Sabraski was able to pull away out of the turns but Zeller didn’t back down. One last caution slowed down the leaders, but the green flew and they were back at it. Jensen put the pedal down and was able to pass Sabraski and took over the lead. The crowd went wild as the leaders battled for the top points. Zeller then moved next to Sabraski again. Jensen was able to pull away as Sabraski and Zeller battled for second. As the white flew Sabraski had the point, but as they went through turn four, Zeller didn’t let off the gas and they crossed the finish line neck and neck. Jensen took the win and Zeller took second with a lead of .039 over Sabraski.
Racing will resume next Friday night at 7pm.
