Track & Field: Two more records fall

Two girls relay teams set new school records while the Princeton girls track team finished an all-time-best third place at the True Team Sectional Tournament Wednesday, May 9 at Totino Grace High School in Fridley. And in the discus, Jadyn Bonasera took first place with a throw that set a new personal best for the Princeton field event performer.

The girls team took home third place overall by continuing to work hard at the strong season they are having and breaking not one, but two school records in the process.

The 4×800 relay team of Ashley Urman, Kaitlin Kittock, Melinda Meyer and Caitlin Reeves broke their own record of 10:14.70 set in Big Lake with a new record time of 9:58.40.

The 4×200 team of Katie Bialka, Alicia Lipka and Maddy Wood and new addition Anna Oakes at 1:50:00 broke the record of 1:50.48 set in 2011 by Kadie Savage, Alicia Lipka, Katie Bialka and Maddy Wood.

The 4×200 relay team took second place, trailing just Sartell-St. Stephen. The 4×800 relay team took fourth place behind Totino Grace, Sartell-St. Stephen and St. Cloud Cathedral.

Jadyn Bonasera continued her dominance in the discus, taking first place with a personal best of 123’4”. Caitlin Reeves took third place in the 1600 meter run. Taylor Laabs also had a personal best and took third in the triple jump scoring 33’6”. Others placing in the top five were Katie Bialka, placing fifth in the 300 hurdles, and Amanda Groebner placing fifth in the pole vault.

“The format of this meet played right into our hand as our girls team is strong across the board,” said coach Tom Ostroot. “The girls accomplished something that has never been done, finishing third. This was a true test of the strength of our entire team and they met the challenge with only two teams, Totino-Grace and Sartell-St Stephen which, in my opinion, are in the top 12 teams in Minnesota, scoring more points.”

The boys team took home ninth place.

“We went into this contest knowing that the format would not be to our advantage for the boys, however, they rose to the occasion and performed at their highest level, coming away with a ninth-place finish,” Ostroot said.

“Our distance crew ran well again, coming away with our highest place of the evening at fourth in the 4×800 relay. Chase Arens and Ryan Yonak placing seventh and 11th in the 3200 and pole vaulters Travis Pope and Bailey Carlberg placing seventh and 12th, continuing to make improvements.”

The True Team meet is structured differently than a traditional meet, Ostroot said. In the True Team, athletes earn points according to how they place relative to the rest of the field. For example, if there are 20 athletes in a race, first place gets 20 points, second place gets 19 points, and so on, ending with the 20th place receiving one point. Each team can enter two athletes in each event and one relay.

“This format truly shows the strength of the entire team,” he said.
