Storm water runoff stands on this section of Fourth Street South, shown in a photo looking east from Fourth Avenue South on June 19 this year. The Patty Ross residence at 306 4th St. S. is shown at left. The city is looking into ways to deal with the drainage issue.

The council also discussed a drainage issue where storm water collects on much of Fourth Street South between Fourth Avenue and Third Avenue. The council decided to have public works look into the matter further.

Some of the background is that Patty Ross had contacted public works director Bob Gerold about runoff going onto her property at 306 4th St. S. as well as onto the adjacent Fourth Street. Consulting engineer Nielson said that whatever is done, water can’t continue to collect on the street because it causes the street to deteriorate.

Some of the ideas for keeping the water from collecting on the street, Nielson said, include changing the elevation of the Ross yard so water can go there and infiltrate into the ground, construct an underground infiltration system, or look at building a storm sewer.
