It’s probably been a couple decades since the Princeton Panthers (1-3) waited until June to get their first win but manager Curt Wilson was still happy with a 13-2 victory at Quamba Sunday night.
The Panthers grabbed a 6-0 lead after four innings and rode the strong pitching of Josh Vickers to their first win of the season.
The win evened the team’s Eastern Minny record at 1-1, while the Cubs dropped to 0-3, 1-7 overall.
Vickers struck out nine in his six innings of pitching and didn’t give up a run until there were two outs in the sixth.
“It was nice to see his control,” Wilson said. “He had only two walks and pitched six strong innings.”
Veteran Joe Swanson pitched the last three innings and gave up one run.
Jeff Oslin was Quamba’s starting pitcher and the Panthers got a run off him in the second after Sam Solberg singled and stole second, Jerad Goldsmith’s infield single scoring him.
Brent Miodus and Solberg drove in runs in the third after Kyle Norman led the inning off with the second of his four hits.
The first of Jesse Zimmer’s two two-run doubles made it 6-0 in the fourth.
Norman, who saw some playing time for the St. Cloud Technical College team this spring, stole three bases and Solberg had one.
“I bet it’s been awhile since a Panther team had four stolen bases,” Wilson said.
The Panthers added a run in the seventh after Ryan Carling led off with a single and then Zimmer knocked in two more in the eighth with his second double.
Carling drove in three runs in the ninth with a double.
Norman and Zimmer each had four hits and Carling and Solberg each had three.
Busy schedule ahead
A four-games-in-eight days stretch began on Wednesday this week with a home game against Quamba.
Then the Panthers play league-leading Rum River at 7:30 on Friday, go to Mora Sunday for a 4 p.m. game, and play at Cambridge against Rum River next Wednesday at 7:30.
Tyler Bialucha was scheduled to pitch against Quamba, Josh Ludwig is to get his first start of the season against Rum River on Friday and Vickers will start Sunday at Mora, Wilson said.
