John was born March 21, 1934 in Princeton Township to Oscar and Inez (Jones)Pike. After high school John helped his dad with farming and the livestock trucking
He married Lorraine Gennow on July 19, 1952. They started their own dairy farm. In 1954 John went to auctioneer school and became an auctioneer. Through the years he conducted many auctions in the local area.
In 1957 John and Lorraine started their own auction clerking business. John also was a livestock dealer for many years. He also drove school bus for
Odegards garage for 15 years. John farmed for many years, milking cows, raising
beef cattle, and Percheron and Belgian horses. John was one of the original founders of the Northern Minnesota Draft Horse Assoc., founded in February
In 1981 John and Lorraine purchased the Princeton Livestock Market (known as
the Sales Barn) located on the north edge of town. He held livestock and miscellaneous sales every Tuesday and horse auctions once a month. Twice a
year there was a draft horse auction. He sold the Princeton Livestock Market in 2001, holding the final auction on September 11, 2001.
He was always proud to have his family involved in the auction business; his wife, children and grandchildren were involved in some aspect. After the selling
of the business John and Lorraine moved to a farm which had to have a home and two pole sheds built.
Horses and sports were John’s passions as far as hobbies. He had a smaller team of horses that he would harness and hook up to a wagon and drive all around his neighborhood. In the past 50 years John could be seen at most football, girls and boys basketball and some hockey games in the Princeton and surrounding areas. He also enjoyed watching games on television.
John is survived by his wife Lorraine of 59 years, 364 days; daughter Terri Ann (Bill) Puffer; son Joel (Susie) Pike; grandchildren Cami (Jason) Oakes, Kelly (Kristin Braucks) Puffer; five great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren Cindy (Frank) Femling, Roger (Sami) Puffer, Mike (Liza) Puffer and Terri Lynn (Chad) Burrell; 14 step-grandchildren and nine step-great great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law Ruth Sanford and Dale Phelps; brother and sister-in-law Robert and Shearon Pontious: sister-in-law and brother-in-law Raymond and Arlene Johnson; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and many special people who called him there other dad or grandpa.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Inez Pike; father and mother-in-law Robert and Ethel Gennow and brother-in-law: Donald Sanford.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 22 at the New Life Church, Princeton, with Rev. Dan Osborn officiating. Interment was in Oak Knoll Cemetery, Princeton.
