Lahn: Welcome to a new school year

With the start of a new school year less than one week away, I would like to welcome back our students and staff for another great year. We would like to extend a special welcome to those who are new to us for the first time.

As we begin the school year, we have many reasons to be proud. Thanks to the hard work of our students and staff, our test scores have never been higher. Thanks to the support of our community, our class sizes are among the lowest in the area. In addition, the Princeton Public Schools have been fortunate to maintain strong course offerings and extra-curricular opportunities that all students can enjoy.

We begin the school year with a new transportation provider. Over the summer months, Mankato-based Palmer Bus Co. has been working with district staff to ensure a smooth transition. We are excited to work with the great staff at Palmer Bus Co. and welcome them to our community.

Returning students will be welcomed by several facility upgrades, including new lockers at Princeton High School and renovated athletic facilities. Also, the district has improved technology by introducing a number of Apple iPads for use by students and staff.

Throughout the year, we will continue to focus on strong initiatives that enhance our curriculum and improve classroom instruction. Among these will be an ongoing focus on improving student achievement with an emphasis on mathematics. A continued focus on school-wide strategies that foster positive student behavior and reduce bullying will improve the learning environment for our students.

While we are excited about our recent progress and the new initiatives we have introduced, there will be challenges ahead. What to do with an aging South Elementary School, in need of millions of dollars of basic maintenance is at the top of the list. In the coming weeks, our school board will be hard at work examining potential solutions to challenging questions regarding South Elementary. As always, we will keep the public informed and will seek community input as we move forward.

Thank you for your continued support of the Princeton Public Schools.
