$40,000 in drugs seized at casino
Darren Dexter, 27 of Forest Lake and Valareya Leecy, 21 of Isle, were arrested on dtug charges, according to Mille Lacs county Sheriff Brent Lindgren. The arrests were made by agents of the North Central Drug Task Force, who were working with the FBI, Lindgren said.
Agents obtained a search warrant for a hotel room after observing marijuana in the room, Lindgren said.
While executing the search warrant agents discovered several jars of marijuana and a safe. Inside the safe agents found a loaded .22 caliber handgun, $7,000 in cash and an estimated three-quarters of a pound of Methamphetamine, he said.
“The approximate total street value in drugs discovered in the room could easily exceed $40,000,” Lindgren said.
After the significant quantities of drugs were discovered, Leecy was apprehended in Pine County and returned to Mille Lacs County to face criminal charges. Both suspects were seen in court on Friday September 14, 2012.
Dexter and Leecy both appeared in Mille Lacs County District Court on Friday, Sept. 14.
Dexter was charged with first degree possession of a controlled substance. Bail was set at $400,000.00 unconditional, or $200,000.00 with conditions. He was ordered held for being in possession of a firearm after having been convicted of a previous crime of violence. Dexter’s was also wanted on a warrant from Pine County for first degree aggravated robbery.
Leecy was charged with two counts of fifth degree controlled substance crimes. She was release of her own recognizance.
“This is a significant drug seizure for our area,” Lindgren said.
The positive impact of this drug seizure on our area drug traffickers/users is a huge success. The negative results on our area communities from those whom abuse illegal substances are very costly. We are hopeful that one day narcotics operations such as this one will help stop these illegal substances from impacting our children and our communities, Lindgren said.
The North Central Drug Task Force has been in operation since 2005. The Task Force is comprised of law enforcement officers from the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Kanabec County Sheriff’s Office, Mille Lacs Tribal Police Department and the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office. This also includes the County Attorney’s Offices of Aitkin, Mille Lacs and Kanabec.
