Forward Maggie Peterson scored Princeton’s lone goal in the first half to give the Tigers a 1-0 win over the St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders Tuesday night at Whitney Field in St. Cloud. The win earned the girls their first Granite Ridge Conference title in just three years playing at the varsity level.
Setting up the victory was a key 4-0 shutout of St. John’s Prep at home Sept. 27. Maggie Peterson scored the lone goal of the first half, then Ashley Schramel, Allana Mattson and Bridget Walters found the net in the second half.
Coach Heidi Finstad credited Haley Sandin’s defense on the Johnnies’ Claire Culligan as key to the victory, and a sign of the growth the team has made this season.
Coach Finstad: “Against St. John’s, we were led by Haley going man-to-man against (48-goal scorer) Claire Culligan in the middle. We have been focusing on taking away other team’s strengths. We knew Claire was their biggest strength. We had to make adjustments to contain Claire, and Haley did that for us.”
