Tiger girls relish first playoff victory

The Princeton girls recorded their first-ever playoff victory when they racked up a 3-0 home win over Duluth Marshall Saturday, Oct. 13. Allana Mattson scored the lone goal of the first half for the top-seed Tigers.

Princeton pulled away with two goals in the second half. It was 2-0 when Taylor Laabs knocked in a rebound off a Brittany Beckman free kick. Beckman added the third goal with style when she bent in a corner kick with under four minutes to play.

The Tigers (13-2-2) next host the Section 7A semifinals against No. 4 seed Cloquet (13-5-3) at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16. Princeton and the Lumberjacks tied 1-1 in their Sept. 8 meeting. The other semis will pit No. 2 Hermantown (13-3-2) against No. 3 Esko (12-6).

“Cloquet will be another good match-up for us. It will be fast and physical, and we can match up well with them,” forecast Tiger Coach Heidi Finstad.

The Section 7A finals will be Thursday, Oct. 18 at Denfeld’s Public School Stadium on the south (west) side of Duluth (7 p.m.).

• Battling it out in the Oct. 16 semifinals in 7A Boys Soccer are No. 1 Duluth Marshall vs. No. 4 Chisago Lakes, and No. 2 Denfeld vs. No. 3 Grand Rapids. The 7A boys championship will be Oct. 18 (7 p.m.) at Chisago Lakes.
