Truman Sanford

Truman “Pete” Sanford, age 90 of Big Lake, passed away in Big Lake on Tuesday Dec. 25, 2012.

Pete was born on October 14, 1922 in Princeton to Gordon and Truman SanfordElsie (Nystedt) Sanford.  He grew up in the Princeton area and graduated from Princeton High School.  On July 21, 1951 he was united in marriage to Lorraine Neddersen.

Pete was a lifelong farmer, first in Brooklyn Park and then in Big Lake since 1959.  The couple moved to Big Lake in 1973.  He was an innovative farmer always willing to try new and better ideas.  He was also one of the first farmers in the area to use irrigation in 1961.  Even in his later years when his health was failing, Pete always kept track of the crops and their performance.  He also worked part time for Burlington Northern Railroad for 26 years.  He and Lorraine wintered in Arizona since 1979.  Pete was also an avid deer hunter and fisherman.

Pete is survived by his wife Lorraine;  sons Jeffrey (Nancy) of Big Lake, James (Susan) of Big Lake;  grandchildren Sonya, Lukas, Zachary, Scott, Julie, Justin, James, Jr., and Jenna; great grandchildren Alex, Calla, Charlotte, Landon and Ava;  brothers Douglas Sanford of Princeton, and Merlyn (Dorothy) Sanford of New Brighton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Elsie, and an infant sister Margaret.

The family would like to thank the staff at Cherrywood of Big Lake for their loving care.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m.  on Sunday. Dec. 30 at Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel, 250 East Broadway, Monticello.  Further visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral on Monday. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 31at Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel with Dr. Tom Sterneman officiating.  Interment will be at Big Lake Cemetery.  Funeral arrangements are with the Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel of Monticello.
