Gun permit requests spike
Permits to carry handguns rose in Mille Lacs County and permits to purchase handguns went up as well in the city of Princeton since the December 14, 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary massacre in Newtown, Conn.

Twenty students and six adults were
fatally wounded at Sandy Hook, before the shooter fatally shot himself at the school on December 14. The shooter had fatally shot his mother before going to the school.
No connection can necessarily be established as to cause and effect for the increased number of permits being issued to either purchase or carry handguns since the shooting, but the records are there nevertheless, detailing the rise.
Police departments, like the one at Princeton, only issue permits to purchase handguns, while it is the sheriff’s departments that issue the permits to carry the handguns, Payne noted.
Payne reported on Monday that he issued six permits to purchase handguns between the day of the Sandy Hook shootings and Jan. 7, compared to two such permits during the same period a year ago.
“Not a whole lot of change,” said Payne, though he noted that it is still triple the number from a year ago.
On the Mille Lacs County side, the number of permits to carry a handgun jumped more dramatically. Sheriff Brent Lindgren issued 17 such permits in the period between the Sandy Hook shootings and January 7. Lindgren issued three permits in the same period a year ago.
Payne, commenting further about the number of gun-purchase permits being issued, said it “does seem to be up, not just in Princeton, but in other jurisdictions.”
