Dan Muench scored a hat trick and Collin Buness and A.J. Wesloh scored two goals each to lead the Princeton boys hockey team to an 8-3 win over Sauk Rapids on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Princeton Ice Arena.
The Tiger offense was on fire, peppering Sauk Rapids goalie William Mortenson with 54 shots on goal.
Princeton went up 1-0 with a short-handed goal from Buness at the 1:18 mark of the first period. Sauk Rapids tied the game two minutes later. Wesloh put Princeton up 2-1 about a minute before the end of the opening period.
Princeton went up 3-1 on a Chase Lindenfelser goal at 3:47 of the second period. Sauk Rapids cut its deficit to 3-2 about three minutes later. Wesloh scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 13:41 of the second period to put the Tigers up 4-2.
Muench scored back-to-back goals about two minutes apart to give Princeton a 6-2 lead five minutes into the third period. Sauk Rapids cut Princeton’s lead to 6-3 before Muench scored his third period of the quarter at the 8:59 mark. Buness picked up his second goal of the game at 9:59 of the third period to ice the 8-3 Tiger win.
Muench and Buness each had five points for the Tigers. Muench had three goals and two assists. Buness had two goals and three assists.Cam Paulson also had three assists. Dan Voce added two assists.
Princeton goalie Max Mattson made 24 saves.
Princeton was 1-10 on the power play and had 33 minutes with a man advantage. The Tigers had 25 penalty minutes and shut out Sauk Rapids on nine power play attempts.
