Princeton, seeded No. 3 for the Section 5A tourney, defeated visiting No. 6 seed Sauk Rapids-Rice 4-1 in the Feb. 21 quarterfinals. Dan Muench scored two power-play goals, with solo goals added by Dan Voce (shorthanded) and Jake Green. Max Mattson made 29 saves
against the Storm.
The victory sets up a great rubber game at No. 2 St. Cloud Cathedral on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. The Crusaders pounded No. 7 Mora-Hinckley 17-1 Thursday night. The Tigers and SCC split the regular season series to share the Granite Ridge title.
Also alive in the other half of the 5A brackets are 3rd-ranked and No. 1 seed Hermantown (10-0 over Proctor) and No. 4 Rogers (3-1 over Legacy Christian). Winners from Saturday’s semifinals will meet in the Section 5A title game Friday, March 1 at the Ice Forum in Champlin Park.
Boys Basketball: North Branch 85, Princeton 78
North Branch took a 41-35 halftime lead and held on to defeat the Tiger boys in a non-conference matchup of Section 7AAA partners Feb. 21. Princeton was led by Jack Sinkel (20 points), Matt Wendorff (18 points) and Travis Chmielewski (17 points).
