Tigers battle hard but fall to Hawks in 7AAAs

Princeton, seeded ninth for the Section 7AAA boys basketball tourney, gave No. 1 seed Hermantown a strong battle into the second half before falling in the March 8 quarterfinals 80-61 in Hermantown.

The Tigers, led by slick passing & rebounding by senior center Matt Wendorff, was down by nine points in the first half before roaring back to tie it at 38-38 when Wendorff put back an O-board at the buzzer.

Hermantown reasserted its inside attack to take over the momentum in the second half. The Hawks next get No. 4 Cloquet in the March 13 semifinals at Duluth East. The Lumberjacks defeated Zimmerman 76-61 Friday night.

Quarterfinal results in the other bracket half: No. 2 Grand Rapids 74-68 in OT over No. 7 North Branch, and No. 3 Chisago Lakes 55-49 over No. 6 Duluth Denfeld.

The 7AAA championship will be March 15 at Duluth East.
