Princeton junior Mikayla Brooks kept her solid 2013 season alive by advancing to day two of the Section 7AAA girls golf tournament.
On Memorial Day on the Grand National links layout in Hinckley, Brooks shot a 10-over 82 to tie for fourth-best round among the section competitors. Brooks carded one birdie during her round, finishing on the front with a strong 37, after posting pars on seven of her last nine holes.
Brooks returns to Grand National on May 30 to vie for a state berth (10:56 a.m. tee time).
Also shooting for the Tiger girls on Monday were Kaylee Koski (99), Brianna Dorr (102) and Rebecca Maus (123). The Tigers finished the team season placing 11th in the section standings.
Just six strokes separate the top three 7AAA girls teams who will also return for day two action: Andover (335), Grand Rapids (339) and Forest Lake (341).
• The Tiger boys wrapped up their golf season by placing 13th in the morning session at sections on Grand National. Seniors Hunter Bies (90) and Korben Weidenborner (91) led the way for Princeton, followed by Marshall Bies (92), Caleb Scharber (95), Ben Pauley (96) and Chris Thompson (103).
Returning on day two to determine the 7AAA team champion are Grand Rapids (300), Forest Lake (303) and Chisago Lakes (308).
• On May 22, the Tiger boys placed third at their own Princeton Invite, finishing with a 362 team total. Albany (343) and Milaca (354) finished ahead of them in the nine-team meet. The Huskies’ Zach Luethmers was medalist with his 84.
Hunter Bies shot an 87 – including a 41 on the back– to tie for sixth place while leading the Tigers. Pauley (90), Weidenborner (91) and Scharber (94) filled out the team score, with Thompson (105) and Marshall Bies (107) also getting in rounds on the home course. Ryan Gamec (97) and Cole Heinemann (99) shot the best rounds on the Princeton II team in the tourney.
