The Princeton side of the Princeton & Zimmerman Farmers Markets will open this Saturday at the Princeton Mall parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and run until noon. The Zimmerman market is set to open Tuesday, May 21, and will run 3-6:30 p.m.
Farmers market manager Al Feldeverd – who has Oak Park Farm that grows organic vegetables, berries and more – said that farmers market shoppers in Princeton should not expect to see rhubarb, asparagus or a few other typical things this Saturday because of this year’s late spring.
“My rhubarb is just poking its head out of the ground,” Feldeverd said on Tuesday.
But there will be plenty of other things that are not weather dependent. That includes eggs, meat, granola, maple syrup, honey, jams, jellies, and soap, said Feldeverd and fellow vendor, Paul Warpeha. Warpeha owns and operates Pelucidor Farms and has maple syrup that he harvested this spring. Warpeha and Feldeverd also noted that many of the farmers market vendors have heated greenhouses to supply bedding plants.
No one can predict how many vendors there will be on Saturday, Feldeverd said. He explained that it will vary according to weather conditions. During a mild, sunny opener of the farmers market season in Princeton, there have been about 16 vendors, he said.
The farmers market season here ends on the last weekend in October, Feldeverd said.
