Mayerchak defends GRC Singles title

Princeton senior Isaiah Mayerchak stacked up his third straight Granite Ridge tennis title when the Singles & Doubles Tourney was hosted May 11 on the PHS courts.

In the No. 1 Singles brackets, Mayerchak, seeded third, opened with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mora’s Hinks. In his second match, Mayerchak faced Jason Dilly of Becker, coming from behind to win a 2 1/2 hour match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The weather conditions were extremely challenging, with 20-30 miles per hour winds, multiple hail attacks, and cold temperatures.

The championship match had Mayerchak roll to a 6-1, 6-1 win over top-seed Zach Kantor of Foley.

At No. 2 Singles, eighth-grader Thomas Mayerchak went 2-1 to take third place at the tourney. He opened with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 victory before falling in straight sets to Becker’s Dawson Brown. In the third-place match, T. Mayerchak won 6-1, 6-1 over Cathedral’s Jameson.

The Tigers’ Keenan Hansen & Schuyler Volkmuth went 2-1 to place fifth in the GRC No. 2 Doubles brackets. They finished with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mora’s Monson & Coleman.

At No. 3 Singles, Jason Friend went 1-2 for fourth place, prevailing 6-0, 6-0 in his opener. Elliott Arens at No. 4 Singles also placed fourth, taking his opening match 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Tigers placing sixth in Doubles were Tyler Leverty & Austin Feero at No. 1, and Sam Barthel & Brett Winkelman at No. 3.

• On Thursday at home, the Princeton boys were clipped by section-partner St. Francis 4-3 during another brisk day for tennis. T. Mayerchak stepped in at No. 1 Singles for a 6-2, 6-3 win. Also posting Tiger victories were Friend at No. 2 Singles (6-2, 6-0) and Arens at No. 4 (7-5, 6-4). Feero & Hansen pushed their Saint foes to a three-set match at No. 1 Doubles, dropping the last set 6-3.

On May 13, Princeton wrapped up GRC matches with a 5-2 loss to St. Cloud Cathedral. T. Mayerchak (6-2, 6-2) and Friend (6-7, 6-3, 6-1) won their singles matches that day.

First-year squad Becker won the Granite Ridge conference title by sweeping all five matches this spring. The Bulldogs won the past three Mississippi 8 Conference championships coming into this season.

• After the May 16 home match with North Branch, the Tigers begin the post-season with the Section 7AA South Subsection Team tourney on Monday. Seeding takes place Sunday night.
