Mayerchak finishes 3rd in 7AA Singles

Princeton senior Isaiah Mayerchak defeated Joe Wetherille in his opening match of the Section 7AA Singles on May 28. He then dropped a match to eventual champion Toby Boyer of Forest Lake before knocking off Austin Stefanich of Grand Rapids in the 3rd-place match. In the True Second match, however, it was Elk River’s Josh Gearou advancing to State with a victory over Mayerchak.

OPENING ROUND REPORT

At the 7AA North Individuals run on May 23 in Duluth, Mayerchak, the No. 2 seed, received a first-round bye. He then defeated Duluth East’s Beaulieu 6-2, 6-3 to advance.

Also in singles action, Princeton No. 6 seed Thomas Mayerchak opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Hibbing’s Specht. No. 3 seed Gus Fedje-Johnston defeated the eighth grader 6-3, 6-4 in the next round.

Also battling for the Tigers in the 7AA North Doubles brackets were 8th seed Austin Feero and Tyler Leverty who were defeated 6-2, 6-0 by Cloquet’s Lind and Tomhave. The Tigers’ 10th seed duo of Schuyler Volkmuth and Keenan Hansen were upended 6-0, 6-4 by Hibbing’s Perunovich and Persson.

“All of our entries represented Princeton well. They fought hard and had great attitudes,” said Tiger tennis coach Jon Steinbrecher.

• The Tigers’ team portion of the season came to a close with a 4-3 loss to Cloquet-Esko-Carlton in the 7AA North Subsection opener May 24 back at Duluth. When the 7AA team tourney resumed May 27 in Hibbing, it was Elk River defending its section title by defeating Chisago Lakes in the championship.
