The Princeton High school baseball team came through with a 7-3 win at Duluth East May 27 to stay alive in the Section 7AAA tournament which now goes into a double-elimination format.
The Tigers, 7-12 and seeded 10th for the tourney, drew the No. 7 seeded Greyhounds for Monday’s play-in game. Zack Ludwig went the distance for the Tigers to get the win on the mound, giving up just the three unearned runs.
“We hit the ball really well against Duluth, spraying the ball around their field and getting clutch hits with runners in scoring position,” said Tiger Coach Jesse Zimmer. “Robbie Miller had one of those big hits for us when he drove in two runs to increase our lead to 5-2.”
Zimmer’s Tigers will next travel to No. 3 seed Grand Rapids (13-4), a team they defeated in the belated season opener this spring. That game will be 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 30. Also in that half of the brackets are No. 2 Forest Lake (14-5) and No. 11 Cambridge-Isanti (3-12).
Elk River (13-3) is the No. 1 seeded team in the section and the Elks open the tourney against No. 12 Duluth Denfeld (2-16). No. 4 Anoka (10-7) and No. 8 North Branch (6-10) are also in that half of the brackets as three of four lower seeds won during Monday’s play-in action.
Games will continue in Grand Rapids and Cohasset on Saturday, June 1. (The Princeton/Grand Rapids winner plays at 12 p.m.) The four surviving teams from Saturday then return to Grand Rapids for the June 4 and 5 final stretch to the tourney.
• The Tigers closed the regular season by splitting with Mora on May 23, taking the opening game 6-5 in 10 innings. Ludwig pitched the first seven innings and Chance Parker got the win in relief over the final three innings.
The Mustangs won game two 4-3 despite good Princeton pitching from Dan Muench and Parker.
