Princeton picked up three more points in the Mississippi 8 girls soccer standings with a 5-0 win over Big Lake and a 1-1 tie against Chisago Lakes last week. The Tigers added a 2-0 shutout over Zimmerman Sept. 16 in non-conference action.
Against Big Lake Sept. 10, Lydia Arens broke away for a shot 30 seconds in that just sailed over the Hornets’ net. Then at the 6:30 mark, the Tigers got a free kick by Michelle Menshek who placed it in the middle of a scramble, and Erica Schramel was in the perfect position to tap home the opening goal.
Ashley Schramel and Jordan Suter later had first-half chances on the Hornet net, with saves being made. The physical play increased as the half continued, with bodies flying around on both sides and the score stuck at 1-0.
“Erica Schramel really got us going in the second half with our combination play. As soon as ‘E’ played a couple give-and-goes, it changed our pace completely,” said Tiger Coach Heidi Finstad.
On Sept. 12, the Tigers traveled to Chisago Lakes to play on the Wildcats’ fancy turf field for the first time. Princeton’s goal came on a beautiful free kick by Alanna Mattson. Maggie Peterson got in on the goalie to disrupt the play, knocking the ball to A. Schramel who slipped it home.
“It was a super-fast and physical game on the turf, but I thought our girls responded well. Offensively we were able to put pressure on their back line. Defensively, we were very much on. We won air balls on nine defensive corner kicks and I was pleased with that,” analyzed Coach Finstad. “We also won a large number of 50/50 balls late in the game around the edge of our box. Our mids and defenders made game-changing play after game-changing play for us. This game gave us a ton of defensive experience.”
The Tigers will need all of their defensive savvy when they trek to Blake for a special non-conference game on Monday, Sept. 23.
