Adding two more conference wins over the past week, the Princeton girls tennis squad is in position for what should be a wild finish to the Mississippi 8 schedule.
The Tigers are one game back of leader Monticello who they travel to on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Tigers also have a Sept. 26 home match with balanced Chisago Lakes, tied with PHS at 5-1 in Mississippi 8 matches.
Princeton maintained its pace with a 7-0 win over St. Michael-Albertville Sept. 17 and a 7-0 sweep over Buffalo in a Sept. 23 make-up match. Singles wins against the Knights came from Mary Claire Mayerchak (6-1, 6-1), Bri Dorr (4-6, 6-4, 6-1), Kelsey Dorr (6-1, 6-3) and Sarah Stark (7-5, 6-3). Winning at Tiger doubles were Jenna Doyle & Becca Trunk (6-1, 6-1), Hannah Johnson & Reilee Schepper (7-6, 6-1), and Becca Maus & Megan Farley (6-4, 7-5).
“This match was much closer than the score. At one point on the courts, we were ahead in three matches and behind in four. St. Michael is a very good team– we just won the big points in these matches,” described Tiger Coach Kelly Dorr. “Bri played an excellent second and third set, and Sarah has stepped up everytime we played her in singles. At doubles, Hannah and Reilee played an excellent tiebreaker to close out the first set and kept it rolling in the second.”
Wins against 7AA foes
On Saturday at the St. Francis Invite, the Tigers knocked off Duluth East 5-2 and Grand Rapids 5-2 to aid greatly in upcoming Section 7AA seeding. Princeton paid back an earlier loss to the Greyhounds by getting wins from Mayerchak (6-0, 6-3), Stark (6-3, 6-3), B. Dorr & Doyle (5-7, 7-6, 11-9), Truck & Schepper (6-3, 6-1), and Johnson & Maus (6-2, 6-3).
“Sarah’s win at 4th Singles set the tone for the overall match. Becca and Reilee at 2nd Doubles served and returned the ball very well,” noted Coach Dorr. “This was a huge win for us. It puts us on the same level as Andover and Elk River for seeding consideration.”
Earning wins against the Thunderhawks were Mayerchak (6-0, 6-0), B. Dorr (6-1, 6-0), K. Dorr (6-0, 6-0), Shepper (6-2, 6-0), and Johnson & Stark (6-4, 6-3).
• On Sept. 24, Princeton kept rolling with a 6-1 victory at Cambridge.
