Princeton tennis splits matches at road invite

Princeton girls tennis traveled to Duluth Aug. 30, going 1-1 in matches with section-partner Duluth East and Eveleth-Gilbert. The Tigers are 4-2 entering this week’s action.

The tough Greyhounds tipped the Tigers 4-3 in the second match, improving to 9-0 on the season. Posting wins for Princeton were Mary Claire Mayerchak (6-3, 6-1), Kelsey Dorr (6-0, 6-1) and Reilee Schepper (4-6, 6-4, 6-3). At 1st Doubles, Jenna Doyle and Becca Trunk worked hard before dropping a three-set battle.

“The match came down to a third set in 1st Doubles. Becca and Jenna are doing a nice job of adding more movement to their doubles matches.  They both played singles last year and are making some good improvement on their doubles strategies,” said Tiger Coach Kelly Dorr. “Reilee Schepper played her best tennis of the early season. She is making a move to singles so far this year. Reilee was very aggressive in her two matches that day and did an excellent job of getting in a high percentage of first serves.”

The Tigers won their opening match 5-2 over Eveleth-Gilbert. Schepper won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, with more singles wins coming from Mayerchak (6-1, 6-1), Bri Dorr (3-6, 6-4, 6-2) and Kelsey Dorr (6-3, 6-2). Gabby Dahlen and Krysta Maus added a 6-3, 6-2 win at 3rd Doubles, serving well and controlling the net.

• Princeton’s Aug. 27 home match with Forest Lake was postponed to Sept. 16. The Tigers opened the Mississippi 8 season Sept. 3 against North Branch, winning 7-0.
