SPORTS ROUND-UP: Princeton posted its second Mississippi 8 boys soccer win of the season and third victory overall with a 3-1 effort at St. Francis Sept. 24.
The Tigers scored all three goals in the first half on four shots, with Elliott Arens sandwiching two goals around a Sam Schroeder score.
“Tate Walquist and the defense controlled that whole half with their aggressive play, and Justin Carlson came up with six big saves in goal. It was fun to see,” said Coach Paul Roth.
The Saints gambled in the second half by moving all but one defender up, and they netted one goal to cut into the Tigers’ lead. But Carlson came through with five more saves to secure the victory.
On Sept. 24, St. Michael-Albertville got past the Tigers 2-1. The Knights scored the lone goal in the first half and went up 2-0 early in the second. The Tigers picked up their play, and Travis King knocked home a penalty kick to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes to go.
“Travis’ goal really gave us a jump-start, and we put a lot of pressure on the Knights’ net. We hit the post once and had a couple shots go just wide against a good team,” said Coach Roth.
The Tigers wrap up the 2013 regular season with home games against Rogers Oct. 3 and Two Harbors Oct. 5, then the Section 7A playoffs begin Oct. 10.
