Princeton will face familiar foes when the Section 7AAA volleyball tournament swings into action this week.
The Tigers, seeded ninth, will open at No. 8 St. Francis in the Oct. 23 pig-tail match. The winner will then travel to No. 1 seed Cambridge-Isanti on Friday, Oct. 25 (7 p.m.). The 7AAA semifinals will follow on Oct. 30 at the high surviving seeds.
“The last time we played St. Francis, we took them to five sets. It was a great match, and it was a tough loss for us,” described Tiger Coach Mary Patnode. “We feel ready and prepared to play on Wednesday.”
In the other half of the brackets, Grand Rapids (26-2) and North Branch (19-7) are the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds.
Princeton closed the regular season with a 25-15, 23-25, 25-18, 25-12 home loss to the C-I Bluejackets. Stats leaders in that match: Kills– Jaydee Green (10), Hailey Mattson (5), Beth Scharber (5), Maddie Nierengarten (4); Assists– Charity Hanson (19); Serving– Melinda Meyer (11/11), Hanson (11/12), Mattson (10/12, 3 aces).
“This was one of the best matches the girls have played all year. They played as a team, never getting down, celebrating successes and being loud,” said Coach Patnode. “They showed their potential playing right with the No. 1 team in our section, even taking a set from them. This was a great match to end our regular season, proving to our girls they can compete with any team in our section.”
The Tigers’ final win of the regular season came in a 25-15, 25-17, 25-15 match against Ogilvie. Stat leaders against the Lions: Kills– Green (13), Mattson (9), Scharber (5); Assists– Hanson (28); Serving– Taylor Sleen (19/19, 3 aces), Hanson (5 aces), Miranda Fredrick (3 aces), Meyer (8/8). Digs– Meyer (17).
