Princeton earned its first win on the Mississippi 8 girls basketball schedule by defeating visiting St. Francis 67-56 Jan. 21. Haley Sandin paced the team with 22 points, Taylor Laabs scored 10 and Andie Jackson added 8 points. Danielle Chmiewlewski and Jenna Doyle both chipped in 7 points each against the Saints’ defense.

• Princeton girls basketball ran into long-bodied teams in their last two Mississippi 8 contests last week. On Jan. 14, host Chisago Lakes defeated the Tigers 71-56 led by 33 points and 16 rebounds from 6’5” center Bryanna Fernstrom.

Haley Sandin scored 20 and Taylor Laabs 14 against the Wildcats. Support scoring came from Danielle Chmielewski (8), Ashley Schramel (6) and Anna Oakes (5).

• On Jan. 16, Princeton hosted Rogers, and the taller Royals prevailed 55-38 with a strong second half.

Assists from Schramel to Chmielewski and Sandin to Oakes kept the Tigers tight with Rogers in the early going. The two teams traded a stretch of blocking each other’s shots, then Miranda Janssen grabbed an offensive rebound and dropped in a reverse layup. A Sandin pull-up jumper, Jenna Doyle scoring off an inbounds play and Schramel knocking down a three-pointer from the wing had the Tigers within 27-20 at the break.

Leading scorers at the finish against Rogers: Sandin 9, Chmiewlewski 7, Doyle 7, Schramel 5 (9 rebounds).

Princeton boys outfox Hunters

Princeton boys hoops picked up its fifth win on the season 83-66 over section-partner Duluth Denfeld at home Saturday afternoon.

Jack Sinkel shot past the Hunters for 39 points to pace the Tigers. Brady Peterson scored 18 in the win, with Reed Mitchell (10) and Eric Norman (6) adding more key points.

• The Tigers dropped their two Mississippi 8 games last week beginning with Chisago Lakes holding for a 74-70 win Jan. 14. Sinkel (22), Caleb Scharber (19) and Peterson (15) scored the bulk of PHS points against the Wildcats.

On Jan. 17, host Rogers knocked off the Tigers 92-53 with five players scoring in double-digits. Peterson and Scharber led Princeton that night with 13 and 10 points. Adding additional scoring were Tanner Kinney (7), Ben Jungroth (6), Sinkel (5) and Mitchell (5).
