Princeton High School seniors Gino Fraboni and Sam Glauvitz became medalists in this year’s state class AA state speech meet Friday, April 11, in Blaine, with Fraboni placing second and Glauvitz seventh.

The top eight competitors in a category receive a medal. Fraboni competed in storytelling, and Glauvitz in serious poetry. Matt Kreft, a junior at PHS, competing in humorous, also went to the state meet this year, his second year of going to state in speech.

“I was just ecstatic,” Fraboni said about placing second. Fraboni, who went to the state speech meet twice before, said he originally hoped to at least make it into finals at this year’s state speech meet and see how far he could go. “I wasn’t expecting second,” he said.

“It’s so exciting,” said first-time state speech meet attendee Glauvitz about being a state speech medalist. “To final the first time to state is really something else,” she said.

Fraboni, who has been in speech all four years of high school, said he put his most work into speech this year as far as activities and that it “all came together and paid off. It was a good way to end my high school speech career.”

Fraboni plans to attend Gustavus Adolphus College this fall, his major undecided, and join the college speech team, he said.

Glauvitz said she is pretty sure she will be attending St. Cloud State University this fall, majoring in visual arts.

PHS head speech coach Thor Mattick notes that more than 60 schools were represented at the Class AA state speech meet, with the top three students in each speech category within each of the eight AA sections competing.

Mattick called it a “tremendous season,” and said Fraboni, Glauvitz and Kreft had a good day overall at the state meet.
