Mille Lacs County Sheriff Brent C. Lindgren reports that on May 14, 2014 at approximately 7:37 AM, the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office Communication’s Center received a 911 call reporting that an Onamia School bus was involved in a crash with a single motor vehicle at the intersection of Stevens Road and 90th Avenue located in South Harbor Township.
Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the crash and were assisted by the Isle and Onamia Police Departments, the Onamia Fire Department and Mille Lacs Health System Ambulance Service.
According to the preliminary investigation, the school bus was carrying approximately 27 students along with one pera and the driver from Onamia School. The bus was traveling southbound on 90th Avenue and a passenger car carrying a driver and two children was traveling eastbound on Stevens Road at the time of the crash.
The passenger car that the bus had hit was being driven by Thea Keil, 33 years old of Onamia, MN. In the car with her were her two children ages 13 and 14. Everyone in the car was seat belted at the time of the crash and Ms. Keil appeared to be injured above her right eye and she and her children was later transported to the Mille Lacs Health System in Onamia, MN by a private vehicle. The air bags in the passenger car appeared to deploy at the time of the crash. Both children sustained bruises and scrapes.
The bus being driven by Becky Ryerson, 57 years old of rural Onamia, MN, was later cited by a Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Deputy for Inattentive Driving. No one on the bus at the time of the crash required any medical attention at the scene and the children were later picked up at the scene by another school bus and taken to school.
