Despite the rainy summer 2014, the Princeton American Legion baseball team is out to a 4-3 start to the season this summer.
The Post #216 squad opened the season with a 2-0 win over Milaca June 9 when Luke Hallbeck through a no-hitter over his seven innings. Sam Archer had the team’s two RBI in the win, and Tanner Kinney finished with two hits.
Next, Princeton defeated North Branch 16-7 on June 10 when Archer had three hits and drove in six runs. Nick Zeroth also supplied three hits to back up the pitching effort of Dalton Mattson (six innings, three Ks).
Post #216 improved to 3-0 in NorthEnd League games with a 7-5 win over Mora June 12. Joe Bernard had two hits and four RBI in that game, with two hits also coming from Archer and Zeroth. Archer struck out eight over his five innings, and Zeroth got the save with one strikeout over two innings of relief.
Princeton took its first loss of summer when St. Francis held for a 5-3 win on June 17. Bernard had two hits and three RBI. Hallbeck struck out four Saints over five innings of pitching.
On June 18, the Princeton boys split a double-header with Zimmerman. Zimmerman won the first game 5-4 despite solid pitching from Mattson and Zeroth. In Game 2, Archer improved his pitching record to 2-0 on the season in a 10-5 Princeton victory. He struck out five Thunder and allowed five hits. Zeroth stroked three base hits for the offense.
At Cambridge June 23, Princeton was down 5-0 before a rally fell just short in a 6-4 loss. Cambridge used four hits and a double-steal to open a 4-0 lead in the first. Princeton worked back into it on doubles from Kinney, Mattson and an Archer RBI single. The team had runners at second and third in the top of the seventh before Cambridge sealed it.
