Highway Wrestling is a growing wrestling club located in Princeton which supports both youth and high school wrestlers. Highway Wrestling was started in April 2013 by Brian Hellman and Larry Boeke, Princeton High School and youth wrestling coaches, respectively, as a way to provide local wrestlers opportunities to advance in Folkstyle, Greco and Freestyle forms of wrestling.
Club practices are held at Whitcomb’s Whitetails where an archery lane has become home to approximately 3000 square feet of wrestling mats. Members of Princeton Youth Wrestling and the Princeton Wrestling Booster Club have been strongly involved in getting Highway Wrestling off the ground. Seventy wrestlers from the area and surrounding cities participated in Highway Wrestling’s recent spring program which focused on Greco and Freestyle wrestling.
Freestyle instructors this spring were Tanner Schaefer and Jay Hildreth of St. Cloud State University’s wrestling program. Zac Nielsen, currently ranked fifth nationally at 85KG/187 lbs. in the USA Wrestling Senior Greco-Roman Rankings, was the Greco instructor this spring. Local youth coaches and former Princeton wrestlers have also served as instructors for Highway Wrestling. This summer, the club will welcome back current and former University of Minnesota Gopher wrestlers Zach Sanders, Danny Zilverberg, Pat Smith and Conrad Rangell as anticipated clinicians.
Ten wrestlers recently represented Highway Wrestling at the MnUSA Kids & Cadets State Greco/Freestyle Tournament. Highlights of the tournament included first and second place finishes by Christopher McLennan in Freestyle and Greco, respectively. Colton Hellman became a triple crown winner with first place finishes in both Greco and Freestyle, adding to his first place finish in Folkstyle in March.
Estin Bishman took home second place medals in both Greco and Freestyle. Kyle Boeke and Hayden Schroeder wrestled to second place finishes in Freestyle and Greco respectively. Kevin Boeke landed on the award podium with a third place finish in Greco. Will Schultz, Cash Stortz, Berkley Bishman and Landen Parent of Highway Wrestling also wrestled strongly at the tourney.
• Kyle Boeke competed Greco and Freestyle for Team Minnesota at the Novice Goodwill Duals held in Madison, Wisc. Colton Hellman will be wrestling Greco and Freestyle for Team Minnesota at the upcoming Schoolboy Duals held in Indianapolis, Ind. Both Kyle and Colton earned these opportunities due to their placement at the MnUSA Kids & Cadets State Greco/Freestyle Tournament and also their performances in open Greco and Freestyle Tournaments held prior to the state tournament. Colton Hellman is currently ranked second nationally in the US Future Olympian Ranking for the schoolboy division at 175lbs.
