Ice falls from sky; hits Baldwin home

A blue plastic tarpaulin sits over the roof peak of a house on the 115th block of 290th Avenue in Baldwin Township now because of the strange occurrence there in the early evening April 28.

That’s when a chunk of ice fell from the sky and went through the roof and continued falling, with a force strong enough that it crashed through the floor to end up in pieces in the basement.

A man working on a car in a neighbor’s yard to the west had heard something strange just before the ice entered the roof, according to Sherburne County Sheriff’s Investigator Joel Brott. The man reported that he heard what sounded like a plastic bag flapping in the wind and looked up just in time to get a glimpse of something going into the roof.

The individual who owned the home where the ice chunk entered wasn’t home. But Albert Walker, the neighbor, was able to call the homeowner and get permission for he and law enforcement officers to enter the home and photograph the damage.

holeinroof2.jpgThe hole where the ice came through the roof was about three-feet wide and was directly above the entryway. The falling ice chunk also left a hole in the floor and pieces of ice were strewn around the basement floor, according to Brott.

Walker said he didn’t want to speculate where the ice had originated.

Brott was asked if the ice could have come from a high-flying jet where perhaps ice was forming on a part of the plane. Brott said he doesn’t have any theories, adding that all anyone can do is speculate.

Five or so years ago chunks of ice were found in a yard at another Baldwin residence, but only a mile or so southeast of the city limits. The location of this latest such incident  was more than twice the distance southeast.

“It’s a strange deal,” said Brott about the latest occurrence of ice falling from the sky.

It could be a megacryometeor!

Megacryometeors are extreme atmospheric events possibly related with atmospheric anomalies (Climate Change)
