| Hope reigns in royalty |
|
By Joel Stottrup Hope Hennessey is the new Miss Princeton and Joslyn Ingalls and Jessica Jones are her two princesses. The new Princeton royalty were crowned Sunday evening during the Miss Princeton pageant at the high school performing arts center. Nearly all the 450-seat auditorium was filled. The coronation was done by the 2007-08 royalty — Miss Princeton, Kassandra Halverson and her princesses, Samantha Wilson and Jalayne Negley-Pettit. Hennessey and Jones graduated from Princeton High School Friday and Ingalls will be a senior this fall at PHS. Hennessey is a manager at Pizza Hut in Princeton, Ingalls works at Marv’s True Value and Jones is employed at Hierlinger’s Shoes. Margaret Miron emceed the pageant that was geared around this year’s Rum River Festival theme, Rum River Round Up. Jake Hermann, back for a second year as vocalist for the pageant, played his Ovation acoustic guitar and sang “Wanted Dead or Alive,” for his opening solo. He did a Johnny Cash medley later in the pageant, giving an unusual rendition of “I Walk the Line” with his voice pitched at its highest tone. The 11 candidates each introduced themselves and gave a plug for their sponsor(s) and answered impromptu questions. Jessica Haldenwanger was voted among the candidates as Miss Congeniality. Close to a half-dozen members of the Minneapolis Aquatennial royalty attended the event. They gave the Aquatennial’s commodore’s pin to Lee Steinbrecher for the Commodore’s award. The honor is in recognition of someone who has done a lot of civic contributions. (See separate story). Among the benefits the three new royalty members will get is scholarship money, once they have completed a college semester. The money awarded will be $1,000 for Miss Princeton and $500 each for the princesses. The three will be riding in many parades during the summer ahead and will make other appearances. They will be in the Rum River Festival parade tonight (Thursday, starting at 7 p.m.). The outgoing Miss Princeton and her princesses also added to the entertainment during the evening. When Negley-Pettit began her farewell speech, she recognized that she was going to cry part way through it. She did partially, with the ability to compose herself at times and keep her voice. But when Halverson gave her farewell speech she went into a mode in the latter part where she couldn’t maintain normal voice tenor. Negley-Pettit noted that each of the three outgoing royalty were so different in personalities but that their differences complemented each other. Negley-Pettit referred to herself as the “late butt” procrastinator, to Wilson as the one with a lot of crazy humor and Halverson as very organized. Comments (0)
