| Flooding pushes Wergin toward special session |
|
By Joel Stottrup State Sen. Betsy Wergin, R – Princeton, is showing support for a special session to assist the flood-ravaged area in southeastern Minnesota and also help farmers hurt in the state’s drought-damaged areas. At least six people have died and extensive property damage has been reported due to the flooding caused by heavy rains last weekend. There had been talk of a special session among state legislators and Governor Tim Pawlenty following the Aug. 1 collapse of the 35W bridge in Minneapolis. The proposed session would deal with unfinished transportation funding business. But Wergin said that she hadn’t thought that having a special session would speed up the process of paying for the replacement of the collapsed I –35W bridge. But “now with the flooding and the crop disaster, combined with the bridge [collapse] it will bring us into a special session,” she said. The Legislature’s next regular session begins next February. The Union-Eagle tried unsuccessfully to reach state Rep. Sondra Erickson, R – Princeton for comment about the idea of holding a special session. Comments (0)
