Area recounts change little

The Mille Lacs County recount of votes in the Minnesota House 16A and the Minnesota Senate 16 contests showed little change.

However, when this was written on Monday morning, not all of the district precincts had been counted. Mille Lacs County, under the supervision of county auditor/treasurer Phil Thompson, conducted a recount of the House 16A race on Nov. 19 and the Senate 16 race on Nov. 20. The recounts were in the commissioners room at the Mille Lacs courthouse in Milaca.

Here are those recount results in Mille Lacs.

In the House 16A contest between DFLer Gail Kulick Jackson, Milaca, and incumbent Republican Senator Sondra Erickson, Princeton, Jackson ended up with 7,106 votes to Erickson, 6,169. Jackson had 937 more votes in Mille Lacs than Erickson at the end of the recount.

Erickson’s campaign has challenged two of the Jackson votes during the recount and Jackson’s campaign has challenged one of the Erickson votes.

Those three ballots are thus not counted for now in the recount vote. The three ballots will go to the state canvassing board for it to make a determination.

Jackson beat Erickson by 99 votes in the Nov. 4 general election vote count. Jackson received 11,042 votes in the district to Erickson’s 10,943.

Erickson gained four more Mille Lacs votes in the recount and Jackson gained one. That gave Erickson a three vote Mille Lacs gain barring any change by the canvassing board.

Fobbe-Krueger race

None of the general election ballots in the race between DFLer Lisa Fobbe, Princeton, and Republican Alison Krueger, Big Lake, were challenged in the Mille Lacs recount.

Fobbe had beaten Krueger in the general election 22,353 to 22,264 in District 16, a difference of 89.

Both were running for the state Senate seat vacated by Republican Betsy Wergin, Princeton. Wergin abandoned the seat earlier this year to take the governor’s appointment to replace her brother LeRoy Koppendrayer, Princeton, as a state Public Utilities Commissioner. Koppendrayer left the commissioner seat to retire from public office.

Fobbe ended up with 7,224 votes in the Mille Lacs recount and Krueger received 5,504.

The only change the recount made in that race in Mille Lacs County versus the Nov. 4 election total was that Fobbe gained one vote.

Like the House 16A race, the recount had not been completed in the entire Senate District 16.
