Catalano earns pair of honors

By Joel Stottrup

kendracatalano.gifPrinceton High School senior Kendra Catalano has received honorable mentions for two of her seven submissions in a Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) composition contest this past June. She entered compositions in the solo, large ensemble and chamber divisions.

It was her tuba solo titled “Storm” and her large ensemble piece, “Season Rhapsody,” that each received an honorable mention.

The MMEA contest was statewide and was open to students at the high school and college levels. Catalano entered in the high school level. She wrote “Storm” when she was a junior and “Season Rhapsody” when she was 15.

PHS band director Jim Baxter said getting the honorable mentions in the contest is a “really big deal.” He has been encouraging the music composition Catalano has been doing the past couple years.

“I was pretty shocked,” Catalano said about the honorable mentions that she learned about on Oct. 16. Shocked, she explained, because the tuba solo only took her three hours to write and “the other one I didn’t know what I was doing.”

Catalano is looking at majoring in college in music education and possibly music composition.

Catalano plays clarinet, bass clarinet, contra clarinet, flute, tenor sax, marimba, vibes, bells and chimes and is learning piano and snare drum.
