Stueber resigns

By Chris Schafer

Princeton girls basketball coach Matt Stueber, who has been the head coach of the program for six years, resigned last Thursday.

Stueber said it was the grind of the position, all the meetings and all the other work that came above and beyond coaching basketball that caused him to consider resigning. Stueber said he would like to take at least one year off to spend with his kids and see what his future holds. He also stated he has an interest in coaching at the college level and would still like to be involved in basketball in Princeton, perhaps as a youth coach.

Stueber led the Tigers to an 82-79 record over six years but the Tigers were 56-28 over the last three years, winning a conference championship in 2008-09 and a team academic championship in 2007-08. The Tigers also won the section academic championship and finished second in the state academic competition that same season. The 2008-09 team set a Princeton record with 21 wins in a season.

In addition to the team titles, Stueber, the Princeton Coach of the Year for 2007-08, said he is proud of the community service projects the program began under his watch including the Play for the Cure Breast Cancer game and adopting one or two families during the Christmas season and providing them with gifts.

“I’ll be around,” he said. “Basketball is in my blood.”

The Princeton girls have enjoyed many successful steps in building their program in Coach Stueber's six years. He and his coaching staff have taken a program that hadn't experienced many positives and developed the players into a team that has become a powerful presence in the Mississippi 8 Conference and in Section 5AAA as well as helping the girls to become more active in community events. The people of Princeton, the school, and girls basketball program should be thankful for all Coach Stueber has done to help these kids become good athletes, students, and citizens. Best of luck, Matt!
