Legion season ends with loss to Cambridge

By Chris Schafer

The season ended for the Princeton Legion team last week after Princeton lost consecutive games to Mora, 5-3, and Cambridge-Isanti 4-2.

Princeton was slated to open the playoffs with a first-round contest against Milaca but the rivals to the north chose to forfeit the playoffs because of low numbers and an illness on the coaching staff.

Princeton was awarded a win after the Milaca forfeit but the local team found the rest of the playoffs more difficult as they were eliminated in the next two games of this double-elimination tournament.

Mora

Base runners were hard to come by as Princeton lost to Mora 5-3 July 13. Princeton had seven hits in the game — six singles and one double — and the local team only drew two walks, both by Brent Miodus. Nick Shodeen also reached base after he was hit by a pitch.

Only three different Princeton players recorded a hit in the game.

Princeton lead-off hitter Kyle Norman swung a hot bat recording three hits in his five at-bats — including the team’s only double. He also scored in the third and fifth innings.

Mora jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning and led 3-0 before Norman scored to cut it to 3-1 in the third. But Mora scored the eventual game-winning run in the fifth before adding an insurance run in the ninth.

Norman scored in the third and the sixth and Jake Wood scored in the fourth to close the gap to 3-2 but the Legion team couldn’t close the gap any more in the loss to Mora.

Cambridge-Isanti

After losing to Mora, the only way Princeton could stave off elimination from the playoffs was to defeat number-one seeded Cambridge-Isanti. Unfortunately the home team wasn’t able to accomplish this goal as Princeton lost 4-2 July 14, eliminating them from the playoffs.

Once again Princeton struggled for base runners as the Legion team recorded only six hits and one walk all while striking out seven times. Norman also reached base when he was hit by a pitch.

Four of Princeton’s nine batters recorded a hit in the contest with three of the six hits coming off the bat of Miodus. He also scored once. Josh Vickers also scored a run and Shodeen collected the team’s lone RBI.

Princeton scored once in the first inning and led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth before Cambridge-Isanti scored twice to tie the game. C-I moved ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh and scored an insurance run in the bottom of the ninth.

Princeton had a chance to tie the game at three in the top of the eighth but a ground ball out with catcher Eric Tadych on third ended the inning.

The loss offset a strong pitching performance on the mound by Josh Hanus who went 8.2 innings yielding five hits one earned run and striking out 10.
